When you live in (or are visiting) Maine in the winter, it's a great time to take advantage of the off-season in the MidCoast. In the winter of 2022, Dan and I set out to enjoy a few days of a MidCoast winter, and here's how it went.
We stayed at The Samoset Resort and the 250 Main Hotel and loved both for different reasons. We love The Samoset because it offers so much to do. They had just finished up their outdoor Glacier Ice Bar which is always a festive time! They have a very relaxing spa, several restaurants, an indoor pool, and miles of gorgeous views. 250 Main is a cozy boutique hotel located in the heart of downtown Rockland. Their attention to detail from the rooms to the decor is incredible, and so are the views from their rooftop deck! Their daily happy hour by the fire is a perfect way to start the night and I loved their handmade coffee mugs at breakfast.
We loved eating at Primo (the ultimate farm-to-table experience in the area), getting oysters and wine at 18 Central, sinking into Maine-inspired Italian classics at Nina June, and ordering one of everything at Long Grain in Camden. All within a few minutes from both hotels!
If you are a planner, don't forget to order from Ruckus Donuts the night before. Their creative flavors are outstanding, but they sell out quickly!
If you're in the mood to brave the elements, walk the Rockland Breakwater to see the lighthouse up close. We went on a sunny (not very windy) day and had the place to ourselves (besides the seagulls of course).
We also spent the morning skiing at the Camden Snow Bowl. This small mountain offers views of the sea while you ski and also has a toboggan chute onto a frozen pond if you're feeling daring!
Lastly, If you happen to be in the MidCoast area during The Belfast Curling Club's "Learn to Curl" events, make sure to sign up! It's such a fun sport to watch and learn about!
